The Hoax

Maryland Man Kilmar Abrego Garcia Was a Harmless Father Wrongfully Deported

In March 2025, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran living in Maryland, was deported to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center. The media and prominent Democrats portrayed him as a dedicated father and husband who was legally protected from deportation since 2019 due to gang threats back home. Social media and Democratic leaders, including Senator Chris Van Hollen, slammed the move as cruel, accusing the administration of ripping apart a family, including Kilmar’s autistic son, without due process.

Senator Chris Van Hollen tells CNN “There’s no evidence linking Kilmar Garcia to MS-13”.

The Maryland Man Was Suspected Of Human Trafficking

This document is a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) “Investigative Referral” report, marked as “Official Use Only/Law Enforcement Sensitive.” It was created on April 17, 2025, and provides details about Kilmar Armando Abrego-Garcia, specifically focusing on allegations of his involvement with the MS-13 gang, a 2022 encounter in Tennessee, and his immigration status. The report is intended for law enforcement use to assess Kilmar’s potential threat level and criminal activity. Below is a breakdown of the key sections:

  1. Intelligence Source:
    • The report is a Combined Intelligence Unit (CIU) Investigative Referral, meaning it aggregates information from multiple law enforcement agencies.
    • The information is deemed of “investigative/enforcement value” and has been referred to the recipient’s office for further action, potentially under programs like 7EC (for subsequent seizures, arrests, or intelligence reports).
  2. Gang Affiliation Allegation:
    • Date: December 1, 2022.
    • Claim: DHS sources indicate that Kilmar Abrego-Garcia was identified by law enforcement investigations as a member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, specifically the Western Clique.
    • Source: The Prince George’s County Police Gang Unit validated Kilmar as an MS-13 member, labeling him a “chequeo” (a low-level member). This validation came from the Western Clique, a transnational criminal gang, and is documented in the Prince George’s County Police Department Gang Sheet.
    • Context: The term “chequeo” typically refers to someone who is being monitored or has a probationary status within the gang, not necessarily a full member. The Western Clique operates primarily in New York, which is notable because Kilmar has lived in Maryland and has no documented history in New York.
  3. Tennessee Encounter (December 9, 2022):
    • Incident: Kilmar was pulled over by the Tennessee Highway Patrol on I-40 in Smith County, Tennessee, while driving a white Toyota Tundra. He was traveling from Houston, Texas, to St. Louis, Missouri, with eight other individuals in the vehicle.
    • Suspicion of Human Trafficking: The trooper noted that the passengers (three days into a construction job) had no luggage, which raised suspicions of human trafficking. Kilmar claimed they were working in construction in St. Louis, but the trooper found this inconsistent with the lack of belongings.
    • Questioning: The trooper interviewed Kilmar and the passengers, who gave conflicting answers about their relationship to Kilmar, their boss, and their work. Kilmar was issued a warning for driving without a license (cited as a “MD Limited Term Temporary” license) but was not arrested.
    • Outcome: No charges were filed, and no incident report number was created. However, a Computer Aided Dispatch number (622057620) was assigned to document the stop.
  4. Watchlisted: Kilmar is flagged as a “watchlisted subject,” meaning he is under surveillance by DHS due to suspected criminal or security concerns (in this case, alleged MS-13 affiliation)

The Maryland Man’s Wife Accused Him Of Domestic Violence

Kilmar’s wife, Jennifer V., filed a “Petition for Protection/Peace Order” in the District Court of Maryland for Prince George’s County, Upper Marlboro, on May 15, 2021. The document details allegations of domestic violence and abusive behavior by Kilmar against Jennifer, requesting a protective order to ensure her safety and that of her children.

Key Details from the Document:

  • Court Information: Filed in the District Court of Maryland for Prince George’s County, Upper Marlboro, with the case number 0502SP0.
  • Petitioner’s Claims: Jennifer alleges a series of abusive incidents involving Kilmar:
    • On an unspecified date, Kilmar became angry after Jennifer asked for his card to pay for gas, insulted her, and drove erratically with her and their children in the car, scaring them. She recorded the incident, noting his yelling and extreme speed.
    • On May 14, 2021, while Jennifer was watching a show, Kilmar yelled at her to turn it off, got angry when she said she wasn’t sleepy, and threw her laptop on the floor, causing the baby to cry. He then pushed her off the bed, punched her, and scratched her left eye, leaving it bleeding.
    • Later that day at 2:00 p.m., Kilmar returned home and announced he was going out with a friend. When Jennifer asked to pick up an order at BJs, he became angry, yelled, ripped her clothes off, and grabbed her arm, leaving marks.
    • On May 15, 2021, at 12:00 p.m., Kilmar left Jennifer’s car parked in the neighborhood. When she asked for the key, he refused to give it to her, saying he had things to do and ordered an Uber to leave.
  • Impact on Family: Jennifer mentions being afraid of Kilmar due to his violent behavior, noting the emotional toll on her children, who are scared of him. She references having photos and videos of his actions and the bruises he left on her.

Hoaxology

The following techniques were used to create this hoax:

Selective Reporting
The narrative that Kilmar was a “harmless father wrongfully deported” selectively omits key details that could challenge this portrayal. For example, it does not mention the DHS report alleging MS-13 gang affiliation or the 2022 Tennessee stop where he was suspected of human trafficking. It also downplays the 2021 domestic violence allegations by his wife, Jennifer. Kilmar is also an illegal alien with citizenship in El Salvador. By focusing solely on his family life, legal protections, and the emotional toll on his autistic son, the narrative creates a skewed version of reality that aligns with the agenda of portraying Kilmar as an innocent victim.

Highlighting Emotional Reaction & Sensationalized Reporting
The narrative emphasizes emotional reactions, such as the “cruel” nature of the deportation and the distress caused to Kilmar’s autistic son, to shift focus away from substantive issues like the allegations against him. By highlighting the family’s suffering and Democratic outrage (e.g., Senator Chris Van Hollen’s statements), it encourages the audience to judge based on emotion rather than a full examination of the facts.
